A Nicer Way to Say Some Things

I travel alone a lot — so, I eat out alone a lot. When I go into a restaurant, the hostess usually greets me with some version of, “Is it just one?” And right way, I feel like I let her down… “I thought one would be sufficient,” I think to myself… “Should I go back outside and look for more people?” It would be nicer — or at least I would feel better — if the hostess could instead greet me with, “We are so glad to see you! We have a lovely single table waiting just for you.” When I’m on the road, this is generally the only one-on-one human interaction that I get (unless you count my calling the hotel front desk and asking for more toilet paper); so, do me a favor hostess, greet me like a table partially full; rather than mostly empty.

I used to get that a lot. Working at night, I would go into places alone in a heartbeat. Still do. I always figured tha I really didn’t need anyone else since it’s not polite to talk wit food in your mouth. It’s also cheaper. 🙃
